Erlkonig is a work based upon Schubert's lied known by the names of "Der Erlkonig" and "Roi des Aulnes" , which is, in turn, based on Goethe's poem about a child attacked by a supernatural force - the Erlkonig. The work, described by Heller as a Ballade, explores the story through the use of several characters, and contains excitement, mystery and suspense as the story is told through Heller's passionate melodies and ability to write emotively for the piano.
