Ladzekpo, this 363-page bookDVD is geared for percussionists of all ability levels interested in the powerful sounds from West African music and culture. The book and accompanying DVD focus on four traditional dance drumming pieces in depth--Akpese, Gadzo, Kinka, and Adzohu--presented in their traditional form with musical notations, songs, proverbs, and the tonal drum language known as vugbe. hartigan then connects the sounds and feelings to the modern drumset and shows how they can be applied in various ways to other styles like Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Gospel, and West African Highlife. With hundreds of musical examples, pictures, ancient symbols, and text explanations, this book represents a lifetime of learning from the people of Ghana. The accompanying DVD contains nearly 90 clips totalling over two hours of footage covering the four different styles. The clips were filmed on location in Ghana and consist of large and small ensemble footage of royal, his teachers, local master drummers, as well as dozens of other dancers and musicians performing these dance-drum dramas. This work is dedicated to royal's teachers, C.K. Ladzekpo, Kobena Adzenyah, Abena Mensah, and Elikem Nyamuame.
