So here we are in the same old spot
Know that something needs to happen
But our mouths are locked
Tongue tied, closed tight, sewed shut, yup
I tried hard, but it just wouldn't come up

It's on the tip of my tongue
It's in the front of my mind
But the words were still so hard to find
Finally the reality of the things to come
Pushed me to the edge
I jumped off the cliff into the abyss as I said,

I'm not trying to be a nuisance
I just think we can do better than this
That was simply my two cents
You can, you can take it or leave it

The conversation lingered on and on and
Before I knew it night had turned to dawn and
We'll be searching for the truth in all of it, ha
Are we debating just to win the argument?

'Cause none of us want to hear about when we go wrong
This song could easily be from me to you or me to John
'Cause I have to potential to be the guiltiest
My greatest strength is also my greatest weakness

I'm not trying to be a nuisance
I just think we can do better than this
That was simply my two cents
You can, you can take it or leave it

Let's think about this path that we're taking
Let's think about this future we're creating
Let's think about this life that is fading
Think about it, come on
Think about it, now

Let's think about the time that we're spending
Investing in monetary things that are ending
Let's think about it and let's think together and
Let's think about what we can do to make it better

I'm not trying to be a nuisance
I just think we can do better than this
That was simply my two cents
You can, you can take it or leave it

We can and we will do better than this

ugh...this song is so not about a girl....its about making choices that will have significance and not being afraid to say what needs to be said to get something done the right way

Are you serious?! This song has absolutly NOTHING to do with a girl. Wow. Its about were the world is going down & how no one will listen when you want to make it better.

Dang guys... why don't you just rip apart what this person says.

Chill out! Maybe to them this song is about a girl. That is what is GREAT about music: everyeone can interpret their own meaning. I can see the case being made that this is about a girl. I can also see the case for your arguments too. After all, this is about what the song means to each individual person.

Its John Rueben his songs are more meaningfull. Not about girls. Song Writers write there songs to be interpretted how they want them to be. Not construed into something as meaningless as a girl.

    Um...

Actually, MANY artists write their songs to relate to the listener. That means that it is all about what the listener interprets when he hears a song. Just because his opinion differs from yours doesn't mean that he is wrong. "This song could easily" (LOL... John Reuben quote) be about how a relationship (possibly with a girl) is not going the way that it should be. It isn't that hard to come up with multiple meanings for these lyrics. Don't be so narrow-minded to think that your opinion is the ONLY one that is right. I'm not saying that yours is, because I agree with your interpretation as well as 360degrees.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
