Composed by Francois Couperin. Arranged by Jurg Kindle. Score. Les Productions d'OZ - Digital #DZ 470. Published by Les Productions d'OZ - Digital (ZZ.DZ-470).
ISBN 9782895003441.
With these famous Barricades Mystérieuses by Couperin, Productions d'Oz continues its policy of transcription for guitar of the great "standards" of Baroque music. This piece appears in fifth position in the sixth order of the Second Book of Harpsichord by Couperin (which probably dates from 1717). This second book stands out from the previous one by its great concern for balance and harmony both in terms of the length and composition of each piece and the general form of the orders, the sixth being undoubtedly the most well-known, as are the Barricades Mystérieuses. It is written in B-flat major, a "pastoral" tonality as evoked by the titles of the other pieces. The Barricades Mystérieuses are written in the form of a rondeau. They emit a certain "hypnotic" force which has made them successful thanks to their persistent bass rhythm, their syncopations from beginning to end, and of course the returns of the refrain. In his transcription, Jurg Kindle transposes this piece into D major and disregards a good number of voice sustainings by ignoring the contrapuntal play of the two upper voices. He thus obtains a rather simplified version - which will allow you to approach it as early as the second cycle. Couperin's ornaments are transcribed here in all notes with an option for ties (which seems to me the fairest solution). The overall notation is, as in the previous collections, pleasant and easily readable. An initiative worth pursuing!
