Published by Rick Robertson (S0.17749)."Improvisation" was completed in 1993, but sat on a shelf for almost twelve years until I could find the perfect student to play it. During that time I played it as a church offertory a few times, and in some small recital performances. Eventually it went to Hillyer Jennings, who played it on his high-school senior recital. Whether or not this piece got him into and through Harvard Law School is debatable, but it may be just the piece for a similarly ambitious student. A purist may say that it is more "cocktail" than jazz, but it is as close to jazz as I feel comfortable writing.
