Spohr's "Potpourri for clarinet on themes by Winter" op. 80 was first performed by Simon Hermstedt at the Frankenhausen Festival in 1811. The form of the Potpourri is the standard one for shorter solo works of the period - a slow introduction, followed by a theme and variations, concluding with a 6/8 finale loosely based on the theme (cf. the Weber Concertino, which was composed a few months previously). Spohr took two melodies from Peter von Winter's opera "Das unterbrochene Opferfest" as the basis for the Potpourri. The present edition is based on the original arrangement (by Spohr?) for clarinet and piano, although many notes have been corrected by reference to the orchestral parts. The separate clarinet part contains dynamics and phrasing added by the editor; the original clarinet part is printed above the piano stave.
